Basketball Recap: Sheek Bruns' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sandhills Valley over Sutherland

Sandhills Valley was the 28-27 winner over Sutherland when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Mavericks lost to the Sailors on the road by a 54-36 margin on Thursday. The Mavericks' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it five in a row dating back to last season.

Several Mavericks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sheek Bruns, who posted eight points and three steals. Bruns is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Brayden McNutt, who had six points and eight boards.

Sutherland's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Mortimer, who shot 57% from the field on his way to 17 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Zayn Green, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Sandhills Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Sutherland, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Looking ahead, Sandhills Valley will head out to challenge Twin Loup at 7:00 p.m. on the 19th. As for Sutherland, they will be home for the holidays to greet Maywood/Hayes Center at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
