Basketball Recap: Modoc Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Jordyn Sandage and Katie Erquiaga

Modoc has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell 47-35 to the Weed Cougars on Saturday. The Braves were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cougars earlier this season, when they won 47-32.

Modoc's loss came despite strong showings from Katie Erquiaga and Jordyn Sandage. Erquiaga almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 11 boards, while Sandage posted ten points and five steals. Erquiaga has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Aubree Knighton was another key player, putting up seven points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Modoc smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 21 consecutive games.

Weed's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alayja Oliver led the charge by scoring 14 points. What's more, Oliver also posted a 36% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Angelina Brown, who put up nine points in addition to seven boards and three steals.

Modoc's defeat dropped their record down to 17-8. As for Weed, they have been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 19-5 record this season.

Modoc didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-22 win against Mt. Shasta on the 11th. As for Weed, they have also already played their next game, a 51-47 loss against Fall River on the 10th.
