High school football: No. 24 St. Edward at Archbishop Hoban headlines MaxPreps Top 10 Games of the Week

By Zack Poff Oct 18, 2023, 9:30am

Two Southern California matchups featured led by No. 5 Mater Dei at Orange Lutheran.

Ohio concludes regular-season action with a showdown between two of the state's top teams as Archbishop Hoban (Akron) hosts No. 24 St. Edward (Lakewood) on Friday. That matchup highlights this week's MaxPreps Top 10 Games of the Week.

Archbishop Hoban is 8-0 and has won every game by double digits. St. Edward, the back-to-back Division I state champs, has won four in a row since a 15-13 loss against No. 16 Massillon (Ohio).

This is the fourth straight year the two Ohio powers have met with St. Edward winning the previous two. Archbishop Hoban won 35-0 in 2020.

Julian Lewis and No. 18 Carrollton (Ga.) have been rolling since a season-opening 39-34 loss against Langston Hughes (Fairburn, Ga.). The Trojans have won seven straight by an average margin of 41.3 points per game. Lewis has thrown for 1,920 yards to go with 29 touchdowns against one interception. They have a big test on Friday against Westlake (Atlanta).

Chandler and Basha (Chandler) face off in a huge game in Arizona. A win on Friday will go a long way when it comes to rejoining the MaxPreps Top 25. The Wolves check in at No. 34 in our expanded top 100, while the defending Open Division state champs are at No. 50.

No. 5 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) looks to bounce back after a 28-0 loss at No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). Up next is a road contest against Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) on Thursday. The Monarchs have won 11 straight meetings against the Lancers.

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Rabun Gap, Ga.) and Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.) lock horns in a matchup of undefeated teams. They have combined to win 16 of 17 games by double digits.

This will be a great final test for both teams before the playoffs get underway next week. St. Edward seeks its third consecutive Division I state title and seventh overall. The Knights are close to joining the MaxPreps Top 25 and are ranked at No. 31 in our expanded top 100. A win on Friday would get them in the national rankings next Monday.
