Softball Recap: Affton Cougars vs. Hazelwood West Wildcats

Affton had lost six straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 2-10-1 to make it seven. They came up short against the Hazelwood West Wildcats, falling 19-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wildcats this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 18-3 back in September.

As for Hazelwood West, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-4. That 16 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

For Hazelwood West's part, Allisan Cafolla and Taylor Lee made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Cafolla struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Lee pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Cafolla has posted since back in October of 2024. At bat, Cafolla went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and one double, while Lee got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mia Boschen, who went 2-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Mariah Thomas, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Affton will head out to challenge Ladue Horton Watkins at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Hazelwood West, they will challenge Ursuline Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
