Football Recap: Mykheal Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Academy of Richmond County over Thomson + How To Watch

The matchup between Academy of Richmond County and Thomson on Friday hardly resembled the 14-7 effort from their previous meeting. The Musketeers took a 50-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Musketeers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 298th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 103rd).

Several Musketeers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mykheal Smith, who rushed for 75 yards and a pair of TDs on only eight carries. Another signal caller making a difference was Carson Hand, who threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns.

Thomson was led to victory by Zay Brinson and Noah Merriweather. Brinson rushed for 82 yards and five scores, while Merriweather rushed for 133 yards and one TD. Those five rushing touchdowns gave Brinson a new career-high.

Academy of Richmond County dropped their record down to 0-2 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Thomson, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Coming up, Academy of Richmond County will venture away from home to face off against Westside at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Musketeers' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Thomson, they will host Grovetown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
