Football Recap: St. Thomas Aquinas' Win on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Seven

St. Thomas Aquinas extended their winning streak to seven on Friday, bumping them up to 7-1. They came out on top against the Monarch Knights by a score of 31-20. That's more bragging rights for the Raiders, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Mason Mallory had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, while also throwing for 166 yards and one TD while completing 78.6% of his passes. Those two rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Virgil Lemons, who gained 100 total yards and two touchdowns.

As for Monarch, they suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 4-4. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 57th, while St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked sixth).

Despite the loss, Monarch still got an impressive performance from Florentino Lopez, who threw for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also punched in one score on the ground. A healthy portion of Lopez's aerial production (86 yards to be exact) went to Chris Cortinas, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

St. Thomas Aquinas wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 19-12 win against American Heritage on the 24th. As for Monarch, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 41-32 victory against Piper on the 24th.
