2022 MaxPreps All-America Team: Brock Porter of St. Mary's Prep headlines high school baseball's best

By Kevin Askeland Jul 1, 2022, 9:00am

MaxPreps National Player of the Year led Eaglets to dream season; Dan Hignight of Providence is Coach of the Year.

It would be hard to cap a high school baseball career better than the way Brock Porter of St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) did earlier this month. In addition to being an integral part of a national championship team that won 66 games in a row, Porter also finished his career with a no-hitter in the semifinals of the Michigan Division 1 playoffs.

Now, Porter adds to his list of accomplishments with his selection as the MaxPreps National Player of the Year. In doing so, Porter becomes the first player from Michigan to be named in the 15 years that MaxPreps has been selecting All-America teams.

Porter was nearly unhittable this year. Besides tossing the seven-inning no-hitter against Forest Hills Northern in the semifinals, Porter also had two other no-hitters on the season. He posted a 9-0 record and gave up only nine hits and three earned runs all season. For his career, Porter gave up only nine earned runs and 35 hits over 121 career innings. He went 21-0 over the past two seasons with a 0.52 ERA.

Ranked No. 7 in the nation by Perfect Game, Porter could be the first high school pitcher selected in next month's MLB Draft. With Dylan Lesko of Buford (Ga.) missing the second half of the season due to injury, Porter (who is ranked just behind Lesko by Perfect Game) emerges as the top-rated pitcher. Multiple mock drafts have Porter as the top high school pitcher selected.

Providence (Charlotte, N.C.) is home to three state championship teams, 21 conference champions, 18 All-Americans, 15 MLB Draft picks and three MLB players, according to the baseball team's Twitter page. Now it can add MaxPreps National Coach of the Year to the list as Danny Hignight earns the honor after leading the Panthers to a school-record 34-0 season, a state championship and a No. 3 ranking in the MaxPreps Top 25. Providence previously won state titles in 1995 and 2015 under Hignight, who now has a 425-99 record at Providence.
