Basketball Game Preview: Fillmore Flashes vs. St. Bonaventure Seraphs

The Fillmore Flashes will take on the St. Bonaventure Seraphs at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Fillmore comes in on three and St. Bonaventure on four.

Fillmore is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Thursday as they easily beat Hueneme 61-12. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Yaneli Landin had an outrageously good game as she almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine boards. Those 18 points gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hermelinda Ocegueda, who posted six points along with eight rebounds and six steals.

Fillmore smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive games.

Meanwhile, everything went St. Bonaventure's way against Foothill Tech on Thursday as St. Bonaventure made off with a 62-42 win. The Seraphs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matchups by 20 points or more this season.

St. Bonaventure found their leader in sophomore Sarah Cosio, who went 8 of 20 en route to 21 points in addition to seven steals and six assists. The contest was Cosio's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Bella Rico, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten boards.

Fillmore's victory bumped their record up to 7-15. As for St. Bonaventure, their win bumped their record up to 14-7.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Fillmore has been crashing the rebounds this season, having averaged 38.1 boards per game. However, it's not like St. Bonaventure struggles in that department as they've been averaging 29 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Fillmore was dealt a bruising 63-20 defeat at the hands of St. Bonaventure in their previous meeting back in December of 2016. Thankfully for Fillmore, Dominique Hernandez (who dropped a double-double on 33 points and 12 boards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
