Camp Point Central and Mendon Unity are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2022, but likely not for long. The Panthers will host the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Camp Point Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
Camp Point Central is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Pittsfield just ended the team's eight-game winning streak on Friday. They lost 10-4 to the Saukees. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Panthers have suffered since April 19, 2025.
Briggs Wiskirchen made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run and three RBI.
Meanwhile, Mendon Unity made easy work of Barry Western on Thursday and carried off a 17-5 win. Considering the Mustangs have won seven matchups by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Avery Frese was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Mendon Unity is undefeated when Frese allows one or fewer earned runs, but 8-9 otherwise. Frese was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Sawyer Allen was a standout: he went 1-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Mendon Unity: the team is 6-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Arnsman, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Mendon Unity always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
The victory made it two in a row for Mendon Unity and bumps their season record up to 12-9. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games. As for Camp Point Central, their loss dropped their record down to 18-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Camp Point Central has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mendon Unity struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Camp Point Central skirted past Mendon Unity 8-7 when the teams last played last Thursday. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
