Baseball Game Preview: Atkinson County Rebels vs. Wheeler County Bulldogs

The Atkinson County Rebels will head out to take on the Wheeler County Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Wheeler County will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Atkinson County extended their winning streak to three on Tuesday. The Rebels' pitcher stepped up to hand Turner County a 16-0 shutout.

Jesse James made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, Atkinson County let Gevin Smith and Jack Tillman run wild. Smith got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI, while Tillman scored two runs while going 1-for-2. Atkinson County is 7-2 when Tillman posts two or more runs, but 3-12 otherwise. Drew Carmichael also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Atkinson County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .629. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wheeler County). They were the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over Montgomery County on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won nine in a row.

Atkinson County's record is now 10-14. As for Wheeler County, their record now sits at 7-11.

Everything went Atkinson County's way against Wheeler County when the teams last played back in April of 2018, as Atkinson County made off with a 14-8 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rebels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
