Baseball Recap: Mayfield Victorious

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Mayfield had no problem doing just that on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Boardman Spartans, sneaking past 2-0. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Wildcats as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Not much got past Connor Mize, who gave up just three hits and racked up six Ks to keep Boardman off the board. Mize has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Mayfield saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Claflin, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Claflin has posted since May 4th.

Mayfield's victory bumped their record up to 12-15. As for Boardman, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-14 record this season.

Mayfield will square off against Walsh Jesuit at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Wildcats' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Boardman does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
