Texas state champions make first appearance in high school baseball top 25; Central of Naperville also joins rankings.
The Texas state playoffs concluded last week, bringing several big changes in the middle of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 High School Baseball National Rankings, presented by Milk.
Brenham defeated Calallen to capture the 4A state championship while Carroll topped Klein to win the 5A title. Neither Brenham nor Carroll had been favored to win the title going into the tournament last week, with Carroll not among the top-ranked 5A teams for much of the season. However, their big wins catapulted them both into the top 25, with Brenham at 20 and Carroll at 21.
The win by Carroll allowed Roff to enter the rankings at the No. 50 spot. Easily the smallest school in the rankings, Roff was the Class B champion in Oklahoma. However, Roff holds a win over Carroll and has a narrow loss to Owasso as the only blemish on a 36-1 mark. We'll give credit to Carroll for traversing through a more treacherous playoff schedule in justifying the higher ranking.
Another high riser is Central of Naperville, Ill., which defeated a pair of talented teams from Stevenson and St. Rita to capture the Illinois 4A state championship. The Red Hawks enter the rankings at No. 30, replacing Stevenson.
The final rankings will appear next week following the conclusion of the state championships in Michigan and Indiana. A final Top 100 will appear the first week of July.
