Basketball Recap: Rio Mesa Comes Up Short

Rio Mesa was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They took a blow against the Oxnard Yellowjackets, falling 85-50. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 70-29 back in January.

Kayla Lumas was her usual excellent self, going 9 of 15 on her way to 23 points in addition to eight assists and eight rebounds for Oxnard. Lumas is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sofia Salgado, who went 6 for 15 en route to 18 points and five boards.

Rio Mesa's defeat dropped their record down to 10-17. As for Oxnard, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-7 record this season.

Rio Mesa will challenge Pacifica at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Rio Mesa is facing Pacifica at the right time seeing as Pacifica is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Oxnard, they will square off against Dos Pueblos at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Oxnard is on a seven-game streak of home wins, Dos Pueblos a five-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
