High school girls basketball: Two MaxPreps Top 25 teams upset on first day of Nike Tournament of Champions

Millennium knocks off No. 19 Monsignor Scanlan 83-78 in triple overtime, No. 6 Mater Dei falls 59-56 to Bartlett.

MESA, Ariz. — The first day of the Nike Tournament of Champions provided two upsets of MaxPreps Top 25 teams in the Vincent Cannizzaro Division, including Millennium (Goodyear, Ariz.) winning an 83-78 triple-overtime thriller over No. 19 Monsignor Scanlan (Bronx, N.Y.).

T'maea Eteuati fueled the Tigers with 28 points, including 10 in the second and third extra periods. Freshman Brooklyn Williams added 19, hitting on four 3-pointers. 

Madison Howard of Monsignor Scanlan hit a last-second shot in regulation to send the game into the first overtime and gave the Crusaders a 63-62 lead late in the bonus period before a Dashia Richardson free throw extended the game. Richardson again hit a tying bucket in the second OT, knotting the game at 69.

In the third extra period, Scanlan took a 74-73 lead on a Joei Toledo 3-pointer but Jayda Hunt answered back with a triple for Millennium. Tied at 76, Eteuati's splashed a 3-pointer and finished on a coast-to-coast fat break as the Tigers went up 81-76 and held on for the five-point victory.

The other ranked team to fall was No. 6 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), which lost 59-56 to Bartlett (Tenn.). The Monarchs erased a seven-point deficit with three minutes to play, closing to 56-55 on a Harmony Golightly triple. But the Panthers held on as Anniya Bailey and Jenna Miller hit free throws down the stretch.

Four Archbishop Mitty players scored in double figures in the wire-to-wire victory. Michigan commit Devin Cosgriff led the way for the Monarchs with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Sophomore Maliya Hunter scored 12, junior point guard Tee McCarthy had 11 points and Ze'ni Patterson added 10.

Mitty held the Vikings to seven points in the first half.

No. 3 Bullis (Potomac, Md.) 59, Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) 50

Ivanna Manyacka had 25 points and 18 rebounds as Bullis held off a scrappy Lone Peak squad. Adora Nwude had 17 points for the Bulldogs and Taylor-Anne Williams added 13.

Bullis took a 44-39 lead into the fourth quarter Manyacka scored eight in the final period and Nwude added six as the Bulldogs pulled away.



Kennedy Woolston led the way for Lone Peak with 23 points.


Long Island Lutheran was led by Emily McDonald (13 points, 10 rebounds), Taylor Brown (10 points, five assists) and Bridget O'Hara (12 rebounds, six points) in a wire-to-wire victory.

The No. 1-ranked team in the National Top 10 opened a 20-7 lead after the first period and extended it to 35-18 at half before the bench saw substantial time in the second half.


UNLV commit Keonni Lewis led Democracy Prep with 16 points as it erased a 19-8 first-quarter deficit to cruise to the 13-point victory.

Democracy Prep outscored Mt. Zion 21-5 in the second quarter and opened it up to 57-33 after three periods.



Elyah Ocampo scored 11 points for Democracy Prep and Bray'ana Miles added 10 and La'Niah Hicks chipped in eight.

For Mt. Zion, Diamond Waters had a team-high 14 points as Alexis Riggs and Karmen McDuffie each added seven points.


Bishop McNamara outscored Newcastle 9-3 in the second quarter to provide some breathing room and stretched it to 45-22 after three periods.

Qandace Samuels led Bishop McNamara with 18 points as Jaylah King added 12 and Nyair McCoy chipped in 12. 

Jordyn Richardson led Newcastle with 11 points as Ziyah Sims had eight and Amara King chipped in seven.




San Ramon Valley hit 13 3-pointers, including six in the first period to jump to a 19-9 lead over the Gaels.

Ella Gunderson led the way for the victorious Wolves ith 24 points while Kaitlyn Mills had 12 and Alyssa Rudd added 12.

St. Mary's trimmed the lead to 28-23 at intermission before the Wolves extended it to 60-40 in the fourth as Gunderson had 14 in the quarter.

Destiny Robinson led the Gaels with 20 points and Kyla Solomon added 16.
