California high school football: Jarret Nielsen of Long Beach Jordan leads state passing yardage leaders

According to statistics submitted to MaxPreps, junior Jarret Nielsen of Jordan (Long Beach) leads California high school football in passing yardage.

Nielsen, a three-star prospect according to 247Sports, started his junior campaign with a bang throwing for 576 yards on 31 of 37 passing with five touchdowns in a 57-24 win over North (Torrance). He followed that up with a 300-yard night in a 7-6 win over Peninsula (Rolling Hills Estates) and 186 yards on 11 of 18 passing and two scores in a 31-0 win over George Washington Prep (Los Angeles).

Brady Smigiel of Newbury Park is the only other Golden State quarterback over 1,000 yards passing with 1,031, including a 496-yard effort last week in a 63-52 loss to St. Joseph (Santa Maria). The sophomore signal caller has already thrown for 17 touchdowns, seven in a season-opening wing over Golden Valley (Santa Clarita) and seven in last week's loss.

Sophomore Jordan Crisp of Tulare Union (Tulare) is one yard shy of 1,000 through three games. He was 19 of 33 for 326 yards last week in a 42-35 loss to Redwood (Visalia).
