Basketball Recap: Helix Highlanders vs. El Capitan Vaqueros
Helix was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 47-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Capitan Vaqueros. The defeat was just more heartbreak for the Highlanders, who fell 47-44 when the teams last met back in January of 2024.
Despite the loss, Helix saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Cheyenne McMillan went 8 of 16 on her way to 18 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks. That was a full 52.9% of Helix's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Michaelle Whyte, who scored seven points.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead El Capitan to victory, but perhaps none more so than Paige Worthem, who went 6 for 11 en route to 16 points and eight boards. Worthem's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Keira Heinricy, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Helix's defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for El Capitan, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 15 of their last 17 games, which provided a nice bump to their 21-4 record this season.
Helix wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 45-29 loss against Grossmont on the 4th. As for El Capitan, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-38 victory against Granite Hills on the 4th.
