Basketball Recap: Lumberton Pirates vs. Douglas Byrd Eagles
On Thursday Lumberton's undefeated season almost came to an end. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Douglas Byrd Eagles 58-56. The Pirates have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Eagles, too.

Lumberton had a senior duo take command as Amare Jones went 8-for-19 on his way to 22 points and Christopher Hammonds shot 58% from the field en route to 16 points and eight boards. Those 16 points set a new season-high mark for Hammonds. Nate Lawson was another key player, putting up nine points and four steals.
Lumberton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Marcus 'MJ' McDuffie, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The matchup was McDuffie's fifth in a row with at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Malachi McDuffie, who went 9-for-18 to rack up 23 points.
Lumberton's win bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Douglas Byrd, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.
Lumberton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 45-43 victory against South View on the 10th. As for Douglas Byrd, they have also already played their next contest, a 59-52 win against Gray's Creek on the 5th.
