Manzano had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They skirted past the West Mesa Mustangs 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Monarchs have posted since September 17, 2024.
Manzano took West Mesa into a fifth set where they got it done with a six-point win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-21, 28-26, 22-25, 23-25, 15-9.
Tenille Coleman paced Manzano's offense, picking up 33 kills. Coleman got some help from Alyssa Martinez and her 51 assists. Martinez was also solid from the service line: she led the team with four aces.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Isabella Garcia, who had seven digs and one block. Garcia is also on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted 13 or more in each of the last four games she's played dating back to last season. Ava Parra was another key player, getting 12 digs, ten kills, and one block.
West Mesa's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Looking ahead, Manzano will be playing at home against Rio Grande at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for West Mesa, they are taking a road trip to take on Highland at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
