Softball Game Preview: Mullen Mustangs vs. Englewood Pirates

The Mullen Mustangs will face off against the Englewood Pirates at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Mullen took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They walked away with a 16-12 win over Kennedy. With that victory, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Dani Lechuga made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in August.

In other batting news, Avery Oates was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Alena Martinez was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI and one run.

Mullen hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Englewood got the win against Alameda on Thursday by a conclusive 18-8. Englewood might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by ten runs or more this season.

Englewood is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-10 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Mullen, the victory got them back to even at 10-10.

Mullen took their win against Englewood in their previous meeting back in October of 2024 by a conclusive 15-1 score. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pirates turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
