Volleyball Recap: Aquinas Monarchs vs. Shelby-Rising City Huskies

Aquinas was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 13th straight defeat. They fell 3-1 to the Shelby-Rising City Huskies. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Huskies this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-0 back in September.

Aquinas started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22.

Sarah Coufal paced Aquinas' offense, picking up 16 kills. Coufal got some help from Taylor Smith and her 42 assists. Smith was also solid from the service line: she led the team with three aces.

Aleigha Escobar-Schaefer had an outrageously good game for Shelby-Rising City as she had 24 digs and one assist. That's the most digs Escobar-Schaefer has posted over her last ten matchups.

Aquinas' loss dropped their record down to 3-24. As for Shelby-Rising City, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 18-8.

Looking ahead, Aquinas will challenge Raymond Central on Tuesday. As for Shelby-Rising City, they will square off against High Plains at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.
