Recap: Holtville Vikings vs. Central Spartans
The Holtville Vikings suffered their biggest loss since December 1, 2023 on Wednesday. They had to suffer through a rough 55-21 loss at the hands of Central. Holtville was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Central apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.
Several Vikings players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Vanessa Gonzalez, who scored five points along with 12 rebounds and eight blocks. Gonzalez is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last 12 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Garewal, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Holtville struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Central racked up 12 assists.
Central's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Victoria Zamora, who scored 24 points along with six steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Zamora has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Maryanne Barrett, who scored 15 points along with four steals.
Holtville's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 7-13. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 20.0 points per game. As for Central, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-11.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Holtville will face off against Calexico at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Central, they will head out on the road to take on Imperial at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Imperial focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 last Tuesday.
