Football Recap: Cardinal Newman Takes a Loss

After flying high against John Carroll Catholic last Thursday, Cardinal Newman came back down to earth. The Crusaders lost to the Roman Catholic Cahillite at home by a 49-35 margin on Friday. The Crusaders were down 49-27 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Despite the loss, Cardinal Newman still got an impressive performance from Jyron Hughley, who rushed for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 12 carries, and also threw for 106 yards and one TD. Hughley's longest rush was for an impressive 63 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Phoenix Donghia, who rushed for 78 yards and one score.

Semaj Beals went supernova For Roman Catholic., throwing for 336 yards and six touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes. That's the most passing touchdowns Beals has posted since back in August of 2024. Ash Roberts was another key player, picking up 107 receiving yards and three TDs.

Cardinal Newman's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Roman Catholic, the win also got them back to even at 1-1.
