Recap: Montgomery Aztecs vs. Caruthers Blue Raiders
After a string of four wins, the Montgomery Aztecs's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. The New Year welcomed they with a 79-40 whooping from Caruthers. While losing is never fun, Montgomery can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 406th, while Caruthers is ranked 72nd).
Montgomery lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jordan Whitehead, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds. The game was Whitehead's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Paula Zumstein, who scored eight points along with three blocks.
Montgomery's loss dropped their record down to 9-9. As for Caruthers, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Montgomery will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against Santa Fe Christian at 5:30 p.m. on January 10th. As for Caruthers, they will face off against Fresno Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Fresno Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday.
