The Gunnison Cowboys will take on the Basalt Longhorns at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Gunnison will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Gunnison's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Aspen with a sharp 15-0 win.
Josie Vollendorf was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in August. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylee Vincent, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Gunnison always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .731. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 18 runs the game before, Basalt was a bit more limited in their contest on Tuesday. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Rifle. The Longhorns haven't had much luck with the Bears recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Basalt saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Liliana Santini, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run.
Gunnison is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-11 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Basalt, their loss dropped their record down to 5-16.
Saturday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Gunnison hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .342. However, it's not like Basalt struggles in that department as they've averaged .356. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Gunnison's way against Basalt in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as Gunnison made off with an 18-7 win. Will the Cowboys repeat their success, or do the Longhorns have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
