Basketball Recap: Buena Comes Up Short

Buena had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 1-13 to make it four. They took a blow against the Nogales Apaches, falling 73-16. While losing is never fun, the Colts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 253rd, while the Apaches are ranked 71st).

As for Nogales, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.3 points over those games.

Nogales was led to victory by Mia Contreras and Arlette Munoz. Contreras went 8-for-12 en route to 22 points and five steals, while Munoz posted 11 points along with eight assists and eight steals. Those five steals gave Contreras a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Elexandra Chavez, who earned nine points and four steals.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Buena is set to challenge their familiar foe Desert View at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Nogales will face off against rival Pueblo at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
