Basketball Game Preview: Mesa Verde Mavericks vs. San Juan Spartans

After both having extra time off, the Mesa Verde Mavericks and the San Juan Spartans will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Mesa Verde's defense has only allowed 28.3 points per game this season, so San Juan's offense will have their work cut out for them.

Mesa Verde picked up another tournament win last Saturday. They claimed a resounding 50-7 victory over Elite. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mavericks.

Mesa Verde's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jaiden Alexander, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 18 rebounds. Alexander has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more boards the last 28 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ayvah Cabello, who posted 13 points.

San Juan played against Western Sierra Collegiate Academy and lost via forfeit.

Mesa Verde has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 20.3 points per game. As for San Juan, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Mesa Verde beat San Juan 27-20 when the teams last played back in December of 2021. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mesa Verde since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
