Basketball Recap: Golden Valley Takes a Loss

Golden Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a blow against the El Capitan Gauchos, falling 55-19. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 895th, while the Gauchos are ranked 115th).

El Capitan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shantelle Magana led the charge by putting up nine points and six steals. Magana is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last five games she's played. Alexis Valenzuela was another key player, posting 13 points and four steals.

Golden Valley's loss dropped their record down to 7-19. As for El Capitan, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Golden Valley will challenge Merced at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for El Capitan, they will take on Los Banos at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. El Capitan is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.4 points per game this season.
