Football Recap: South Newton Drops Season-High Score on Tri-County

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Newton). They enjoyed a cozy 34-16 victory over the Tri-County Cavaliers on Friday. For the Rebels, this counts as revenge for the 34-6 win the Cavaliers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in September of 2024.

Lyle Harrington was nothing short of spectacular: he threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns while completing 77.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 30 yards and one TD. That's the most passing touchdowns he has posted since back in September of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Tri-County lost, don't look at Aiden Duniphan. Despite the final result, he rushed for 112 yards and one score on only 15 carries, and also threw for 166 yards and one TD. Duniphan also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making ten total tackles (1.0 for loss) and defending one pass.

South Newton's victory bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Tri-County, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Newton will venture away from home to take on West Central at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans' defense has only allowed seven points per game this season, so the Rebels' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Tri-County, they will head out on the road to face off against Faith Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cavaliers will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 45.6 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
