Football Recap: Watauga Skates Past Erwin with Ease

Watauga extended their winning streak to four on Saturday, bumping them up to 4-0. They blew past the Erwin Warriors 49-14. Fans of the Pioneers have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

It was another big night for Cade Keller, who rushed for 95 yards and two TDs on only five carries, and also threw for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 11 passes. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in October of 2024. Everett Gryder was another key player, rushing for 68 yards and a pair of scores on only seven carries.

Watauga's run defense was locked in: Erwin could only muster 3.3 yards per carry. The team can thank John Wilson Mills for the heroic effort on defense: he. Watauga didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 10.2.

As for Erwin, their defeat was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-4. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 116th, while Watauga is ranked 18th).

Erwin's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Caden Ingle, who threw for 202 yards and one TD, and Jah'Baree Tolbert, who rushed for 57 yards on only seven carries.

Watauga has already played their next contest, a 49-7 win against Asheville on the 26th. As for Erwin, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on A.C. Reynolds at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. The game will give the Warriors their first taste of in-conference action this season.
