Baseball Game Preview: Cheverus Stags vs. Massabesic Mustangs

Cheverus is on a five-game streak of home wins, while Massabesic is on a five-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Stags will host the Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cheverus' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Massabesic's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Cheverus proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 19) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Biddeford 6-5.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Massabesic and Biddeford meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Mustangs' pitcher stepped up to hand the Tigers a 13-0 shutout. The game marked the Mustangs' most dominant victory of the season.

The result came thanks to Landen Richard's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks.

On the hitting side, Emmett Carroll and Ryan Merrifield did most of the damage at the plate: Carroll went 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI, while Merrifield got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those three runs gave Merrifield a new career-high. Henry Marcotte was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Massabesic hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Biddeford struck out eight times.

Massabesic's win bumped their record up to 8-5. As for Cheverus, their victory bumped their record up to 10-1.
