Baseball Recap: Jefferson Triumphs

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Monday as neither Jefferson nor Owatonna made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Jaguars' pitchers stepped up to hand the Huskies a 4-0 shutout. For the Jaguars, this counts as revenge for the 3-2 win the Huskies walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2025.

Max Kocur made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of Jefferson's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is undefeated (and 6-8 when he doesn't). Kocur was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Jefferson got a great performance from Jaxson Haeg as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Haeg also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Jaguars are 4-2 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise.

Kocur wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was MoMo Matas, who went 2-for-3 with one run. That's the most hits Matas has posted since back in April. Luke Houghton also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Jefferson now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Owatonna, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Jefferson will face off against New Prague at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Owatonna, they will take on Washburn at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
