Football Game Preview: St. Joseph Cadets vs. Staples Wreckers

The St. Joseph Cadets are taking a road trip to challenge the Staples Wreckers at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. St. Joseph's defense has only allowed 11.5 points per game this season, so Staples' offense will have their work cut out for them.

St. Joseph is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Darien, who was ranked 16th at the time (St. Joseph was ranked 11th). The Cadets enjoyed a cozy 24-8 victory over the Blue Wave on Saturday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cadets.

The critical scores for St. Joseph came from Jaylen Walker, Finn Kilmartin, and Jake Rios.

St. Joseph didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Paul Karafa, Walker, and Rios picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Darien's side was Kyle Wicker, who forced two fumbles, made 11 total tackles (1.0 for loss), and defended one pass.

Meanwhile, after only seven points in their last matchup, Staples made sure to put some points up on the board against Warde on Friday. The Wreckers claimed a resounding 49-13 win over the Mustangs. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 28-0.

St. Joseph better focus on containing Nick Weil and Chaz Darby as the pair were huge in Staples' win. Weil threw for 141 yards and three touchdowns, while Darby gained 77 total yards and three touchdowns.

St. Joseph's record now sits at 4-2. As for Staples, their record is now 5-1.

St. Joseph came up short against Staples in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, falling 14-10. Can the Cadets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
