The Downey Vikings will square off against the Riverside Prep Silver Knights at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Downey is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Downey came into their game last Saturday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 10-2 to La Mirada. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Vikings, who until this matchup were averaging 3.1 runs allowed.
Delilah Navarro made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Sophia Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Riverside Prep came tearing into Friday's game with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.1 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Knights 16-3. The result was nothing new for the Silver Knights, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Lila Morris tossed a big game, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Breeanna Garcia was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Denise Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.
Riverside Prep always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .594. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Academy for Academic Excellence only posted an OBP of .364.
Riverside Prep's record now sits at 18-1. As for Downey, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-4.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Downey has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .437. However, it's not like Riverside Prep struggles in that department as they've averaged .484. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
