Basketball Recap: El Capitan Triumphs

It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but El Capitan ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. In a tight game that could have gone either way, they made off with a 59-58 victory over the East Union Lancers. Given the Gauchos' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while the Lancers are ranked 98th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

El Capitan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Avnoor Bains led the charge by putting up 14 points and six steals. Bains has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Madysen Dietz, who posted 16 points and three steals.

Ava Barrera and Zyondupree Beasley certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Barrera dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Beasley dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds. That's the most points Barrera has posted since back in December of 2023. Alexa Zuniga was another key player, posting five points and four steals.

The win keeps them at an undefeated 4-0. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.0 points per game. As for East Union, they moved to 3-2 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

El Capitan didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 65-53 victory against Grant on the 5th. As for East Union, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 46-43 win against Ripon on the 5th.
