Basketball Recap: Michaela Ellsmore's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Ferndale over Healdsburg

After flying high against Fort Bragg last Saturday, Ferndale came back down to earth. The Ferndale Wildcats lost to the Healdsburg Greyhounds on the road by a 51-36 margin on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 248th, while the Greyhounds are ranked 107th).

Ferndale's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Michaela Ellsmore, who posted 12 points. Another player making a difference was Maddison Gossi, who had 11 points.

Ferndale's defeat dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Healdsburg, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Ferndale will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Fortuna at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. As for Healdsburg, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Kelseyville at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Kelseyville has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last five games.
