Basketball Game Preview: Mayfield Cubs vs. Polytechnic Panthers

Mayfield hasn't had much luck against Polytechnic recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Mayfield Cubs will face off against the Polytechnic Panthers at 5:00 p.m.

Last Thursday, Mayfield lost to Milken at home by a 55-36 margin.

Meanwhile, Polytechnic hadn't done well against Providence recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Polytechnic blew past Providence, posting a 70-21 win. The Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 25 points or more this season.

Mayfield better focus on containing Areni Ohanian and Maggie Scholze as the pair were huge in Polytechnic's win. Ohanian went 9 for 20 on her way to 24 points in addition to seven boards and four steals, while Scholze made all 6 shots she took for 16 points and eight steals. Scholze is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Harper Doyle, who posted ten points.

Polytechnic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in 16 consecutive matches.

Mayfield's loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Polytechnic, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

Mayfield came up short against Polytechnic when the teams last played back in December of 2024, falling 53-47. Can Mayfield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
