Baseball Game Preview: Newton Eagles vs. St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans

The Newton Eagles will challenge the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Newton comes in on three and St. Joseph-Ogden on nine.

On Tuesday, it was close, but Newton sidestepped Tuscola for a 9-7 victory.

Gavin Meinhart made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over 5.1 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-8 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Dominic Baltzell was incredible, getting on base in three of his eight plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2025.

Newton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph-Ogden got the win against Olympia on Tuesday by a conclusive 10-1. Considering St. Joseph-Ogden has won 19 matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Newton's record now sits at 24-6. As for St. Joseph-Ogden, their record is now 31-2.
