Basketball Game Preview: Canyon Springs Cougars vs. Yucca Valley Trojans

The Canyon Springs Cougars will be taking part in a tournament against the Yucca Valley Trojans at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Canyon Springs is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.2 points per game this season.

Canyon Springs is headed into Saturday's game hungry for a win as their strong season has now been derailed by two straight losses. They fell 59-48 to Orange Vista on Thursday. While the Cougars didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Coyotes 13-8 in the first quarter.

Canyon Springs' defeat came about despite a quality game from Kaleayah Marshall, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. Marshall has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 12 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Izabella Tejada, who posted nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Canyon Springs smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 40 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Yucca Valley lost to Twentynine Palms on the road by a 48-33 margin on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 722nd, while the Wildcats are ranked 311th).

Canyon Springs' loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-5. As for Yucca Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-11.
