Englewood had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. Everything went their way against the Aurora Central Trojans on Friday as they made off with a 15-3 victory. The game was the first time the Pirates have beaten the Trojans on their field since September 16, 2019.
Sloan Stevens was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Stevens was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two runs.
In other batting news, Marli Lighthill was incredible, going 3-for-5 with four runs and one RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Violet Espinosa, who got on base in five of her seven plate appearances with two runs.
Englewood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Aurora Central only posted an OBP of .346.
Aurora Central's record now sits at 1-3.
Englewood didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 7-6 defeat against Jefferson Academy on the 23rd. As for Aurora Central, they have also already played their next contest, a 24-4 loss against Centaurus on the 25th.
