Basketball Recap: Newark Memorial Cougars vs. Kennedy Titans
Newark Memorial was the 52-41 winner over Kennedy when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Newark Memorial Cougars took a 49-36 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kennedy Titans on Wednesday.
Loss or not, Newark Memorial got some senior leadership from Angelina Baca and Sydney Scott. Baca posted nine points, while Scott had 11 points.
Kennedy was led to victory by Payton Siquig and Catherine Cheng. Siquig dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten boards, while Cheng went 6 of 14 on her way to 18 points and three steals. Those 18 points gave Cheng a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Izabella Velazquez, who scored two points along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Newark Memorial has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-15 record this season. As for Kennedy, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a massive bump to their 11-10 record this season.
Newark Memorial and Kennedy could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Newark Memorial (ranked 712th) will meet James Logan (ranked 350th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Kennedy will face off against Moreau Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday down 460 places (613 vs. 153).
