The Madison County Cowboys are taking a road trip to face off against the Lafayette Hornets at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Friday, Madison County had just enough and edged Valdosta out 2-1.
Dalton McNutt made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time he hasn't allowed a single hit since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Micah Jenkins looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, he also gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024.
Back at the plate, Alden Richie was excellent, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one triple and one run.
Lafayette never got on the board in their matchup on Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Branford last Thursday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Buccaneers a 17-0 shutout. The win continues a trend for the Hornets in their matchups with the Buccaneers: they've now won eight in a row.
Like Madison County, Lafayette also got a great game from a two-way player: Garrett Taylor. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Taylor was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hyatt Richardson, who scored three runs while going 4-for-5. What's more, he also posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Trevor Byrd, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.
Lafayette always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Branford only posted an OBP of .263.
Lafayette pushed their record up to 1-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Madison County, the win also got them back to even at 1-1.
