Basketball Recap: Azaria Nelson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Rio Lindo Adventist over Newbury Park Adventist

Rio Lindo Adventist was the 51-36 winner over Newbury Park Adventist when they last played one another back in January of 2017, but their luck changed this time around. The Rio Lindo Adventist Spartans received a blow on Friday as they fell 35-21 to the Newbury Park Adventist Gators. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Several Spartans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Azaria Nelson, who posted two points along with seven boards, three steals, and three blocks. Nelson has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ariana Mendez, who had five points.

Even though they lost, Rio Lindo Adventist smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in 13 consecutive matches.

Rio Lindo Adventist's defeat dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Newbury Park Adventist, their win bumped their record up to 2-4.

Rio Lindo Adventist wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 41-25 loss against Monterey Bay Academy on the 24th. As for Newbury Park Adventist, they will face off against Hillcrest Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
