Baseball Recap: Early County Takes a Loss

If Early County was riding high fresh off their 11-1 takedown of Terrell County on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Early County fell 11-8 to the Carroll Eagles on Saturday. The loss continues a trend for the Bobcats in their meetings with the Eagles: they've now lost three in a row.

Jimmy Powell was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over 4.1 innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in February. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Early County is 2-1 when Powell posts three or more RBI, but 6-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, Christian Grist made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacob McKie, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Early County now has a losing record of 8-9. As for Carroll, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-13.

Early County and Carroll could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in their respective state rankings. Early County will square off against Cottonwood at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday down 241 places (325 vs. 84). Meanwhile, Carroll (ranked 271st) will meet Headland (ranked 58th) at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
