Football Game Preview: Southwest Dragons vs. Jay Mustangs

Southwest is a perfect 3-0 against Jay since September of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Dragons will head out on the road to challenge the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Southwest took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They walked away with a 29-20 victory over Winn. The win continues a trend for the Dragons in their matchups with the Mavericks: they've now won eight in a row.

Dorian Moxley had a dynamite game, rushing for 62 yards and a pair of scores on only eight carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Garay, who rushed for 63 yards and one TD.

Meanwhile, Jay really took it to Martin for the full four quarters, racking up a 36-7 victory. Considering the Mustangs have won four contests by more than 28 points this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Southwest better keep an eye on Tajari Wellington. He was instrumental in Jay's win, rushing for 47 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kyle Jackson was in the mix too, providing the Mustangs with two scores.

Southwest's record is now 7-1. As for Jay, their record now sits at an identical 7-1.

Thursday's game might be decided on the ground. Southwest has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 220 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Jay struggles in that department as they've been averaging 195.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Southwest strolled past Jay when the teams last played back in November of 2024 by a score of 37-18. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Mustangs' Nicholas Rios, who rushed for 100 yards on only 12 carries, and also caught one TD. Now that he won't be playing on Thursday, will it be easier for the Dragons to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
