Whiting hadn't done well against Merrillville recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Oilers walked away with a 3-1 win over the Pirates. This was payback for the Oilers, who suffered a 3-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23.

Lyzett Lozano paced Whiting's offense, picking up 18 kills. Lozano got some help from Andrea Cabrales and her 15 assists. Cabrales was also solid from the service line: she led the team with five aces.

Whiting is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season. As for Merrillville, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-16.

Looking ahead, Whiting will face off against Hammond Bishop Noll at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Merrillville, they have already played their next contest, a 3-2 defeat against Valparaiso on the 30th.
