Basketball Recap: Shannen Wilson and Darby Dunn Secure Win for Canyon

Canyon entered their tilt with Golden Valley on Tuesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victor by a 65-40 margin over the Golden Valley Grizzlies. Given the Cowboys' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 255th, while the Grizzlies are ranked 647th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Canyon was led to victory by Darby Dunn and Shannen Wilson. Dunn went 13 of 30 en route to 34 points along with five rebounds and three steals, while Wilson dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards. The match was Dunn's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Alexandra Sanchez was another key player, putting up six points.

Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Krysta Ezenwa and Janice Orantes certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Ezenwa dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards, while Orantes posted 11 points. That was a full 35% of Golden Valley's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

The victory got Canyon back to even at 13-13. As for Golden Valley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-14.

Canyon is taking a road trip to square off against Valencia at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Canyon knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three games -- so hopefully Valencia likes a good challenge. As for Golden Valley, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Saugus at 5:00 p.m.
