Basketball Recap: Aptos Mariners vs. Harbor Pirates
In what's become a running theme this season, the Aptos Mariners gave their fans yet another huge victory on Friday. They claimed a resounding 46-17 victory over Harbor at home. Given Aptos' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 444th, while the Pirates are ranked 1110th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Berkeley Ashby was a one-man wrecking crew for Aptos as she almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. Ashby hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Wickham, who scored 11 points along with three steals.
Despite the loss, Harbor saw an underclassman step up: Julianne Sanguinetti scored nine points.
Aptos is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season. As for Harbor, they are on a 14-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-16.
Aptos does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Harbor won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Lions at 12:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Luis Valdez Leadership Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 20 points in their last six games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
