Basketball Recap: Mercy Takes a Loss

Mercy lost against Castilleja back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mercy Bears were outmatched by the Castilleja Gators and fell 61-15. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 748th, while the Gators are ranked 140th).

Antonia Vlahos was her usual excellent self, almost dropping a triple-double with 23 points, ten boards, and nine steals for Castilleja. Vlahos has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last 13 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Taryn Johnston, who posted nine points and three steals.

Mercy has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten matchups, which has put a noticeable dent in their 7-10 record this season. As for Castilleja, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 17-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mercy will head out to challenge Capuchino at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Castilleja, they are taking a road trip to face off against King's Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
