Denver North came out on top against Northfield on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run fifth inning. The Vikings blew past the Nighthawks 8-2. Considering the Vikings have won 14 games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Veronica Loera-Tafoya was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Elina Gutierrez was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Gabriela Diaz was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base.
Denver North is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.
