Cannelton and Wood Memorial are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Bulldogs will venture away from home to challenge the Trojans at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Cannelton has given up an average of 17.5 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Cannelton managed to slip by Columbus Christian the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Bulldogs lost 11-4 to the Crusaders on Saturday.
Wood Memorial not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 17th (when they won 16-3). Everything went their way against Pike Central as they made off with a 14-3 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Trojans considering their two-run performance the matchup before.
Joe Jarboe made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 12 batters over six innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Wood Memorial: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-11 otherwise.
In other batting news, Wood Memorial got a massive performance out of Talan Strickland, who went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Strickland is becoming a predictor of the Trojans' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 4-10 when he doesn't). Wyatt Rowe was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Wood Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pike Central only posted a batting average of .222.
Wood Memorial's record is now 8-11. As for Cannelton, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.
Cannelton suffered a grim 14-0 defeat to Wood Memorial in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
